The Special Investigations Unit is a multi-agency drug enforcement task force that was started by a federal grant in 1974. What began as a small local agency task force with agents from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department and the Modesto Police Department to combat street level drug dealers, has grown to a task force that now includes police departments from Turlock, Ceres, Oakdale, Waterford, Newman and Hughson. Additionally, assigned to SIU are federal agents from the FBI, DEA, IRS and ICE.

The SIU is currently focusing efforts on the methamphetamine problem, including major drug trafficking organizations, in partnership with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force and the California Multi Jurisdictional Methamphetamine Task Force.
