In July of 1998, the City of Waterford entered into an agreement for the County of Stanislaus to provide law enforcement services for the City of Waterford. On September 30, 2008, this agreement was extended for an additional five-year term, expiring in June 2013. The Department is currently in negotiation with the City and is requesting to extend the current contract on a month to month basis until the Department can return to the Board for final approval of a new contract.

Both full time and extra help employees of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department staff Waterford Police Services. Of the twelve positions assigned to the City of Waterford, seven Deputy Sheriffs, one Zoning Officer and two administrative positions are fully funded by the City. The Lieutenant, who serves as the Police Chief, is shared with the City of Hughson.

As of July of 1998, Waterford Police Department became Waterford Police Services. Even though there is a new name, the Department Motto, "Service with Respect" continues. The Department is dedicated to provide the highest level of public service with a commitment to provide a high visibility of patrol service, increased narcotic enforcement and the targeting of known criminal offenders. With continued partnership with the citizens of the community, Waterford Police Services has committed itself to the highest standards of professional excellence to fulfill its goals of reducing crime and making the City of Waterford a safer place to work and live.
